Force FroYo Upgrade on your Nexus One

Tired of waiting for Android 2.2 aka FroYo on your Nexus One? Here’s how you can force an update, without having to wait for the over-the-air notification.

  1. Head to Settings > About Phone > Build number and note down what it says there. Mine was on ERE27.
  2. Download the update. The new version is labelled FRF91, and the naming of the update file should reflect both the version your phone currently runs and the version to which you want to upgrade. In my case, the file name contained the part FRF91-from-ERE27.
    FRF91 from ERE27
    FRF91 from FRF50
    FRF91 from FRF85B

The list of download URLs above is from this thread, which might contain a few more if you’re missing the one for you.

  3. Rename the update file to and place it in the root directoy of your phone’s SD card, i.e. /sdcard/
  4. Boot your phone in recovery mode: switch it off, then while holding down the trackball, press the power button again.
  5. In the menu that pops up after the reboot, select BOOTLOADER, and then select Recovery.
  6. The device will reboot again. When it shows an exclamation mark, press the volume up and power button simultaneously.
  7. In the menu that pops up after the reboot, select Apply with the trackball.
  8. The update will run, rebooting the phone several times. Once the screen went black for half a minute or so. Give it some time.
  9. Enjoy delicious frozen yoghurt!
