Spore Creature Creator on Mac

Here’s an exercise for you Mac gamers out there: try and buy the full version of the Spore Creature Creator. Having downloaded and played around with the free version a while ago, I immediately decided to buy the full version. It’s just too much fun assembling weird creatures.

No, I’m not serious, don’t try it. It doesn’t work.

The above website quite clearly mentions a Mac version1, and you can download a free Mac version to play around with. When you click on the “buy” button on the right hand side, you’ll get redirected to the appropriate page in the Electronic Arts online store. Note that the “Features” tab below the product image clearly mentions “PC or Mac” again, in the second line even.

The sharp-eyed amongst you will notice that this is in contrast to the information on the right hand side of the image, where only a PC platform is mentioned… unfortunately, I’m not that sharp-eyed, and figured that there’ll be a choice of PC or Mac downloadables when you buy the game.

So I clicked on the “add to basket” button underneath the product image, selected the only available delivery method, i.e. “digital”, and proceeded to buy the game. What happens next is that you get a download link… not for the game itself, though, but for a windows-only downloader application.

Uh… what now?

I contacted the EA store support, didn’t get a reply. I posted on the EA forums, without any reply from EA representatives other than them deleting my thread… presumably, my wording didn’t sit well with the moderators. I contacted the billing company that processed my paypal payment about a refund, didn’t get a reply. I contacted the EA support again, and got the following, well over a week later:

If you own a Mac, the creature creator is only available on a CD. You will not be able to download it. If you mistakenly done this, please provide the following information so that we can refund the order for the download and you can purchase the CD version.
— EA Dinesh U., 2008-30-06

Well… if the website offered the option to buy a CD version, I might’ve done… but it doesn’t. How’s that supposed to help?

So now I’m going through the process of getting a refund for this. It’s only 5 pounds, not a big loss if I don’t get it back, but… such a badly misleading online shop, followed by bad support… you’d expect better from the world’s biggest game company, huh?

Maybe that’s what happens when you treat employees like they don’t matter.

Spore might be fun, but dealing with EA certainly hasn’t been.

Yes, that’s what I’ll do, and that’s why I’m posting this.

Well, I’ve got the money back at least. That worked out better than expected.
